A NEW domestic violence pilot program to change the behaviour of men who commit family and domestic violence is being trialled on the Mid North Coast.

The new program will include a targeted early intervention and prevention project aimed at raising awareness of the impacts of violence against women and engage primary school children in emotional health and well being activities.

The NSW State accredited “Engage to Change MNC” domestic violence Men’s Behaviour Change Program will be delivered into Coffs Harbour over the next three years.

Program Coordinator Heath Addison told The Macleay Argus the region has the opportunity to showcase a national best practice model in the management and delivery of men’s behaviour change work.

“As this element of domestic violence intervention is in its infancy in NSW, who better to inform the process than those services that have been delivering specialist domestic violence services across the Mid North Coast for over 35 years,” Mr Addison said.

The project will also employ a specialist women’s advocate and case worker to offer case management services and referral options for extended family members of men who are referred into the domestic violence behaviour change program.

Kempsey Families manager Diane Garfield said the new pilot program is a wonderful opportunity for services to come together and work closely to provide educational programs across the region.

“This newly established consortium has been providing services to the Mid North Coast community for over 25 years,” Mrs Garfield said.

“Our knowledge and experience in domestic and family violence will form the foundation for the pilot program.”

Kempsey Families, Port Macquarie/Hastings Domestic & Family Violence Specialist Service and the Warrina Domestic & Family Violence Specialist Service based in Coffs Harbour will deliver the pilot program which will be initially delivered in Coffs Harbour.
